English Version
The Origin of the Aluxes
They say that when the gods created the beings inhabiting this Earth, they left a few, very small creatures incomplete: the aluxes. The gods warned that they were not to escape from the sky, since if they were hit by the rays of sunlight then they would turn into stone. But night came and they escaped. They were so excited that they did not realize when the sun was coming up. They ran to hide, but it was too late for them to return.
Thus, night after night they began to build the pyramids to get closer to the sky, but one morning, without realizing it, the sun came up and they turned to stone.
The gods decided to help them and let them come back to life at nighttime. Since then, the nights in the jungle have been noisy, with the laughter and song of the aluxes.
That is how we the Lacandones tell it.
